“HERE,” COOPER CALLED OUT WHEN he managed to track the marker he’d tied to a tree branch hours earlier. “This is the spot.”

Hannah drifted closer to him so she could study the imprints on the ground. “What exactly am I looking at?” she asked after a few seconds.

“Prints.” Cooper impatiently waved his hand. “I told you we found prints.”

“Yeah, but this looks like a slight indentation in the ground.”

“What do you think a print is?”

Hannah scowled at him. “I was expecting more. I’m sorry.”

“Well, that’s all we have.” Cooper was matter-of-fact. “Can’t you do your woo-woo thing and see if there’s anything to follow?”

“I think you have more faith in me than I deserve,” Hannah countered. “I mean … I can try to see if there’s a trail to follow. I don’t know that it will work, though. You saw the spell I did last night.”

“Yes, and I maintain that spell worked, no matter what you say.” He slid his arm around her waist and tugged her tight against his side. “As for having faith, there’s nobody I trust more than you to see things through.”

“Aw, thanks.” Hannah smacked a kiss on his lips and went back to staring at the prints. “What do you think we should do?” she asked Ivy.

“I’m not sure.” Ivy was outdoorsy by nature, but she’d never fancied herself as a tracker. Still, she hunkered close to the ground and extended her fingers toward the indentations.

“Anything?” Jack asked after a few seconds of quiet.

Ivy shook her head. “Not so much. I mean … I’m not exactly good at this stuff. I usually just follow my instincts.”

“And what do your instincts say now?”

“That this is likely nothing.”

Cooper frowned. “You can’t know until you try to do something.”

“I don’t disagree.” Ivy popped her lips and then let loose a sigh. “Let’s just see if there’s anything here.” She closed her eyes, a low hum escaping her lips. She wasn’t even certain what she was trying to do until Hannah’s hand landed on top of hers.

Then things came into focus … and fast.

Neither woman looked at one another, instead keeping their attention on the print. Within a few seconds, the magic started building between them. It was impossible to tell which of them was providing the power or the direction. They simply fell into a rhythm with one another, and after a few seconds — a time during which Cooper and Jack watched the glowing magic build between them with breathless anticipation — the print caught fire on the ground. It flared bright, showing off a clear outline, and then dimmed to a low glow before completely fading to nothing.

“What was that?” Jack asked when he found his voice.

“Really cool magic,” Cooper replied. “As for the print, it belongs to a bear. I saw one out here a few days ago. I’m guessing it’s going to head into the caves to hibernate in two months. It looks to be fattening up for winter now.”

“You didn’t mention a bear.” Hannah’s eyes were accusatory when they landed on Cooper.
